The following track is a simple mixing project I put together for a class assignment. Basically what the project entailed was starting from scratch with essentially raw audio and applying the mixing and editing skills I have been working on developing since becoming a student to produce a well-polished track. The audio was provided by the instructor and the assignment was to be completed in Protools. More or less, this project represents a mixing exercise intended to refresh our memories after returning from summer respite and to continue build upon the fundamentals of mixing. The real focus of this project was to begin honing our skills with using compression, a critical tool in pro audio that can be very hard to master. I am fairly happy with the results. I was able to manipulate the track using compression, EQ, limiting, gating, and reverb to obtain a fairly satisfactory track. There were problems with the underlying audio that could not be fixed merely with dynamic tools- the band is just sloppy in certain parts- which presented problems and really could not be corrected without sacrificing the overall integrity of the track.

Saleh: Interesting intro, I can’t hear the singer, FIX THE MISTAKE, No bass? I think you could have EQ and compressed the bass to fix the problem instead of just not using it. I don’t blame you for the timing issues because by and large it was the band’s fault.
Chris Baker- Cool approach to the vocals. Compression sounds good. Timing issues were fixed. Good panning. Good outro.
Grant- Good use of EQ on the vocals. Bass sounds a little heavy. Timing issues were fixed. Good mix overall. Use EQ to cut irritating frequencies. Good use of compression on acoustic guitar.
Dan Hook- A little excessive on the reverb w/ vocals. Cut high end from PZM. Good pause in the middle of the song followed by isolated base section. I liked that. Seem to have solved the timing issues. Effects are post fader. Spot mode: Grabber tool will restore a track to original timing.
Emmett- Whoa. Whoa. A lot of sound. Good compression on bass. I’m being verbally assaulted!!!
DP- Acoustic guitar needs low end EQed out. Vocal is quiet. Does Neal just need to turn the volume down on the monitors or is this too loud? Ends abruptly. Could have deleted some of the PZM. I think the vocals should not have been panned right and left.
Alex Williams- Sounds good.
Cory Klinger- A lot of low end ringing on the acoustic guitar.
